Manchester United are close to completing their first signing of the January transfer window.

United brought in Cristiano Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and Tom Heaton to Old Trafford in the summer but have not been able to achieve much on the field of play.

The Red Devils are four points behind fourth-placed Arsenal after they were defeated for the first time under Ralf Rangnick by Wolves on Sunday.

The club are now looking out for top players who are available for comparatively lower transfer fees and River Plate’s Julian Alvarez has been picked as one of such stars.

Alvarez had a magnificent season with River Plate. According to stats from Transfermarkt, he scored 18 goals and provided 7 assists in 21 league appearances for the Argentine side.

And it looks like United are very close to signing Alvarez and are prepared to pay his release clause.

Portuguese transfer specialist, Pedro Almeida tweeted out regarding the matter: “Julian #Alvarez is very close to Manchester United. The English club pays the release clause. #MUFC #River.”

The 21-year-old Alverez is one of the most exciting young talents in the world and has been linked with Bayern Munich, Atletico Madrid, AC Milan, Inter Milan, Juventus and several other teams.

He is believed to have a release clause around £17 million
