As talks about the imminent sack of the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, pervades the atmosphere, the former governor of Nasarawa State has confided in some political associates that he was ready to relinquish the office. Adamu, who confided in one his political associates said: “What is in it politics I have not achieved?” Meanwhile, the party has started shopping for the replacement of Adamu as some persons from the North Central zone have been consulted.
One of them, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said that he has been consulted to consider replacing the APC National Chairman but he declined. The APC National Chairman’s trouble started right from the time he said the APC National Leader, who later was elected President, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, was going to be punished for speaking derogatorily against the former President Muhammadu Buhari. Tinubu, during his campaign for APC Presidential ticket was alleged to have derided the former President, Muhammadu Buhari.
Speaking in Abeokuta, Ogun State, where he had gone for campaign, he had narrated how former President Buhari had cried for losing the 2011 Presidential election, which was the third in series and how he, Tinubu, had gone to Buhari to wipe his tears and promised him that he was going to help him win. The promise, he said, materialized in 2015. However, reacting to Tinubu’s statement on Buhari, Adamu said the party was going to take a drastic measures against him for speaking against a sitting President the way he did.
Also, a day to the APC National Convention that produced the President as the candidate of the party, the APC National Chairman had announced the former Senate President, Senator Ahmed Lawan, as the consensus Presidential candidate for the party. The announcement also had pitched Adamu against Tinubu and his political as- sociates. Further to the crimes that Tinubu political associates are pinning on the APC National Chairman was his role during the Presidential campaign and the challenge he made against the composition of the Presidential Campaign Council (PCC).
It is believed in some quarters of Tinubu political associates that the APC National Chairman never worked for the emergence the President and that he works at variance to the President, a situation some persons said played out in the choice of the presiding officers of the 10th Assembly. After the National Assembly announced their consensus presiding officers, the Adamu-led National Working Committee (NWC) had distanced the party from it.
According to them, the list was handed over to them by the President. Also, the recent disagreement of the NWC with the presiding officers of the 10th Assembly on the choice of the principal officers was another affront against the President and his political associates, a party member had said. Adamu had told the Progressive Governors Forum members (PGF) that the choices of the principal officers by the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio and the Speaker of House of Representatives, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, were mere wishes.
Speaking at that meeting, Adamu said, “But, I am just hearing as a rumour now from the online media that there have been some announcements in the Senate and House of Representatives. The national headquarters of the party of the NWC has not given any such information or communicated about the choice of offices. “And until we formally resolve and communicate with them in writing which is the norm and practice, it is not our intention to break away from traditions.
So whatever announcement is done either the President of the Senate, Deputy Senate President, Speaker or Deputy Speaker, is not from this secretariat.” The National Chairman’s political associates, reacting to the allegation that Adamu might likely be removed at the National Executive Committee meeting this week, said that, “the National Chairman had said he was ready to go.” According to him, there is nothing he has not achieved as a politician
