In a shocking and despicable act of violence, the All Progressives Congress (APC) gubernatorial candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo, narrowly escaped an assassination attempt today. This heinous attack, suspected to have been orchestrated by agents of the state government, marks a disturbing escalation in political violence and intolerance.
Senator Okpebholo, who was en route to Benin, was brutally ambushed by these cowardly assailants. The assault led to the tragic loss of his orderly and left other security personnel with severe injuries. Senator Okpebholo himself sustained injuries in the attack.
This unprovoked attack on our candidate is not only unfortunate but also an affront to the democratic process. Such barbaric acts have no place in our society and must be condemned in the strongest possible terms.
The APC New Media Directorate is appalled by this violent act and demands immediate action from the authorities to bring the perpetrators to justice.
We ask, what are the sins of Okpebholo that he should deserve such treatment in a democratic society? The use of violence to intimidate political opponents is unacceptable and poses a grave threat to the peace and stability of Edo State.
We caution the state government, led by Governor Godwin Obaseki, against further acts of intolerance and insensitivity. Governor Obaseki must take responsibility and ensure that such acts of political thuggery are decisively dealt with.
The APC remains committed to a peaceful and fair electoral process and calls on all stakeholders to eschew violence and embrace the principles of democracy. We urge the public to remain calm but vigilant, and we implore law enforcement agencies to intensify their efforts to maintain peace and security during this critical period.
Senator Okpebholo has shown remarkable courage and resilience in the face of this adversity. His commitment to serving the people of Edo State remains unwavering. We stand united in support of Senator Okpebholo and his vision for a better Edo State.
Signed:
Osigwe Omo-Ikirodah
