The race to represent Edo South Senatorial District in the National Assembly is intensifying as various aspirants engage party leaders across political divides to secure their party tickets. With the 2027 general elections gradually approaching, consultations, endorsements, and strategic alignments are already shaping the political atmosphere in the district.
Currently, Edo South remains underrepresented at the federal level. Critical issues affecting the seven local government areas that make up the district continue to demand stronger advocacy, visibility, and legislative action. The unity of the Benin nation, which forms the core of Edo South, is on the line. This moment calls for sober reflection by party leaders and delegates.
Political parties must rise above narrow considerations and give their tickets to a unifier. Edo South needs a senator who can bridge divides, heal old wounds, and bring the people together under a shared vision. The choice before the parties is not merely about zoning or political expediency. It is about presenting a unity ticket that will solidify the Benin people and restore their collective voice in national discourse.
The selection process must be devoid of personal interest and godfatherism. What Edo South requires is proven leadership with a track record of service. The next senator must represent the overall interest of the people, not sectional agendas or personal ambition. Competence, character, and capacity should guide the decision of members and party stakeholders.
The responsibilities of a senator go beyond attendance at plenary. They include the initiation of impactful bills that address local and national challenges, and diligent oversight of federal ministries, departments, and agencies to ensure Edo South receives its fair share of federal presence. Legislative representation must translate into tangible benefits for the people.
Equally important is the attraction of federal projects to the district. From rural electrification that powers small businesses, to quality education infrastructure, youth and women empowerment programmes, and provision of potable water, the next senator must be a facilitator of development. The district needs schools, healthcare, roads, and opportunities that improve the daily lives of constituents.
Edo South deserves a selfless leader. A doer and a performer with a clear vision for the unity and progress of Edo South and the Benin people. The office must not be seen as a platform for personal enrichment but as a sacred trust to serve. The interest of the Benin people must come before any personal or political consideration.
So far, several notable aspirants have indicated interest in the contest. Senator Neda Imasuen, the current senator representing Edo South Senatorial District, is seeking to retain the seat. His record in office will be a major factor as delegates assess continuity versus change.
Also in the race is Hon. Ogbeide Ihama, former member representing Oredo Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives. His legislative experience and grassroots network position him as a strong contender. Another prominent figure is Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, a two-time governorship candidate in 2016 and 2020, former Chief of Staff, and former Secretary to the Edo State Government.
Completing the list of major contenders is Matthew Iduoriyekemwen, a former member of the Edo State House of Assembly who represented Ikpoba-Okha Constituency. Each aspirant brings a unique political history, support base, and vision for Edo South. Party leaders and members bear the responsibility of scrutinizing these credentials thoroughly.
As the contest unfolds, the people of Edo South must demand more than promises. The next senator must embody unity, demonstrate competence, and deliver results. The future of the district depends on getting this choice right. Party leaders must listen to the voice of the people and choose a candidate who can truly unify and advance the Benin nation.
