A heavy protest has rocked Sapele road in Benin city following the multiple accidents that occurred in the early hours of today in Benin city.
The protesters have besieged the Benin Area command headquarters of the Nigeria Police Force in Edo state.
Standard Gazette gathered that most of the protesters are drawn from Upper Sokponba road in Benin city, the residents of most of the people who died in the accident.
Also joined in the protest are operators of commercial vehicles in Benin city, popularly called Tuke-Tuke.
Some of the protesters who spoke with standard Gazette crime correspondent Festus Alenkhe said, “why is it that the truck that killed our colleague driver and his passengers is not inside the police station.
“I hope they are not trying to sweep this accident matter under the carpet. We will follow it up and ensure that the driver is prosecuted for murder”.
Edo State Police Public Relations Officer SP Bello Kontongs said police investigation on the matter is ongoing.
SP kontongs stated that the main truck involved in the accident had been taken to the office of the State Command of the Federal Road Safety Commission.
He wondered why “some miscreants” would attempt to disrupt traffic and cause tension in the locality.
According to the Police image-maker in Edo state “Our men from the police headquarters were immediately drafted to the area. All the people have been despatched as there is already a free flow of traffic”.
