Bola Tinubu, one of the 23 aspirants seeking to be the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has said the ruling party “will prove Democracy” by allowing a free and fair primary election today (Tuesday).
AfemaiReporters reports that Tinubu’s statement at the Eagle Square, Abuja, has been interpreted by some political analysts as a dig at some stakeholders within the party who strived over the last 48 hours to pick a consensus candidate.
Recall the National Chairman of the APC, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, had on Monday announced Senate President Ahmed Lawan as President Muhammadu Buhari’s choice to fly the party’s presidential flag in the 2023 general elections.
However, the APC governors from the North rejected the choice. Similarly, the Ondo State Governor who doubles as the Chairman of the Southern Governors Forum, Rotimi Akeredolu, described it as an expensive joke.
Furthermore, speaking on the race, the 70-year-old referenced his pedigree.
“My experience as Executive Governor of Lagos makes me unique among other aspirants. I am competent to start from day one,” he said.
As things stand, the odds seem to favour Tinubu, as he is touted to come out victorious.
