Pius Alile’s recent week-long charity and philanthropic events have sparked political controversy, raising questions about his alleged ambition to run for the governorship position in Edo State in 2024.
Many are curious about Alile’s motives behind the extensive activities, including generous donations of millions of Naira, scholarships, commissioning of boreholes, and gifting of generators, among other remarkable giveaways. Some speculate that Alile is positioning himself as a potential running mate to former governor Oserheimen Osunbor, a renowned professor of Law who has expressed interest in the governorship seat after Mr. Godwin Obaseki’s tenure. Adding weight to this speculation, Professor Osunbor was present to commission Alile’s philanthropic initiatives, further fueling the rumors.
Hailing from Egor local government area, Alile is a grassroots politician who previously served as a lawmaker in the council before seeking greener pastures abroad. During my personal encounter with him while pursuing my Masters program in the UK, I found Alile to be a man of integrity and humility. He is a determined individual who wholeheartedly commits himself to causes he believes in. When I visited him in Birmingham, the versatile entrepreneur generously extended his support to me and offered to provide a platform for my continued stay abroad until I decided to return to Nigeria.
But what does this all mean? Has Alile not already proven himself? When we collaborated on Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu’s governorship campaign in 2020, Alile and his wife were a force to be reckoned with—they invested their personal resources into the project as if it were their own. Even in defeat, this political philanthropist never dwelled on the significant resources he had expended on the campaign. Instead, he threw himself into the ring and contested for the Egor/Ikpoba Okha Federal constituency seat, leading one of the most effective campaigns ever seen in party primaries in Edo state, although he lost in the primary to Hon. Crosby Eribo.
Alile possesses a Midas touch in whatever endeavor he pursues. He stands in a league of his own. In my opinion, one does not necessarily need to contest for the position of deputy governor, but if one were to do so, Alile should be duly recognized and rewarded for singlehandedly championing the cause of the All Progressives Congress in the state through his various outreach initiatives.
