Afenifere Backs Kukah, Babalola On State Of The Nation

Pan Yoruba socio- political organization, Afenifere, has thrown its weight behind the submission the Roman Catholic Bishop Sokoto Archbishop Mathew Hassan Kukah and Chief Afe Babalola,( SAN ) about the precarious situation of things in country, saying their objective criticisms were wake-up calls for President Muhammadu Buhari to tackle the challenges.

Afenifere in a statement signed its national publicity secretary, Comrade Jare Ajayi, said though it aligned itself by the expression of the duo, it did not support setting up interim government canvassed by Babalola, because it is illegal and it will set Nigeria backwards.

It said their submissions showed the unprecedented low level to which the country had sunk, including the depth of mistrust among the sub groups in the country.

Afenifere noted that what further compounded the problem in the country were the cheapening of human life, displacement of innocent people from their ancestral homes and the elevation of corruption almost into the statecraft.

The group stated that it was not surprising therefore that senior citizens in the North under the auspices of Northern Elders Forum (NEF) called for the resignation of President Muhammadu Buhari.

The organisation added that the frustration of Nigerians was also behind the call for an Interim Government by Chief Afe Babalola (SAN).

Afenifere said while it acknowledged the enormity of the problems, it did not support the cancellation or postponement of the scheduled elections.

“On the call by the NEF that General Buhari should resign, while it might appear that the call is coming rather late in the day, the frustration that gave birth to it is quite understandable.

“Were the government being properly run, such a call would not have come. That it came from a group known to hardly see anything wrong with an administration headed by a Northerner is an important reason for President Buhari to realise that his government has really failed Nigerians,” Afenifere stated.
