Dear Mr. President,
I write to you today, as a party loyalist and as a deeply concerned Nigerian who cherishes the well-being of our nation. I understand the immense responsibilities you bear and your commitment to making difficult decisions for the good of our country. Your inauguration speech on May 29, 2023, which addressed the removal of fuel subsidies and the unification of the exchange rate, demonstrated your intention to steer Nigeria towards a more sustainable economic future. However, these well-intentioned policies have inadvertently caused severe hardships for many Nigerians, leading to increased living costs and economic distress.
As a concerned citizen, I urge you to address the mounting dissatisfaction that has led to the proposed #EndBadGovernance protest scheduled for August 1, 2024. In light of this, I respectfully request that you consider taking the following preventive actions:
*Nationwide Broadcast*: Before the protest begins, it would be prudent to address the nation. Use this platform to empathetically acknowledge the pains and struggles Nigerians are facing due to recent policy changes. Clearly outline your intentions and the expected long-term benefits of these policies. Communication is vital in reassuring citizens that their government is aware of their hardships and is working tirelessly to alleviate them.
*Reconsideration of Subsidy Removal*: While the removal of subsidies was aimed at redirecting funds for national development, the immediate impact on the cost of living has been profound. I urge you to temporarily reinstate the subsidy, setting fuel prices between ₦200-₦250 or even #300, to provide relief to ordinary Nigerians. This measure would help reduce the cost of food, transportation, and essential commodities, providing much-needed respite. Concurrently, accelerate efforts to repair and expand our local refineries and encourage the establishment of private refineries. This strategic move would ensure a more stable and self-sufficient energy sector, setting the stage for a gradual and less painful removal of subsidies in the future.
*Defense of the Naira*: The partial subsidy payments should be utilized to support the value of our currency. Stabilizing the naira would help ease inflation and restore confidence in our economy. As the economic situation improves, with functional refineries and increased foreign investments, we can then consider re-floating the naira in a controlled manner that minimizes the impact on the populace.
*Transparency in Distribution of Relief Materials and Funds*: There have been concerns about the allocation and utilization of relief food and funds distributed to state governors. It is crucial to ensure that these funds are used transparently and effectively to support vulnerable Nigerians, rather than being diverted for political purposes. For example, in Edo State, there are reports that relief items meant for the needy are being misappropriated for electoral gains. Such practices undermine public trust and exacerbate the very issues these funds are meant to address.
Mr. President, by taking these actions, you can mitigate the dissatisfaction that fuels the planned protest and restore faith in your administration’s commitment to the welfare of all Nigerians. Addressing these pressing issues head-on will not only avert unrest but also pave the way for a more stable and prosperous Nigeria. Your decisive actions at this juncture could be the key to securing your legacy and potentially earning a second term in office.
I trust in your leadership and your dedication to the betterment of our nation. May your administration continue to navigate these challenging times with wisdom and compassion.
