Giant campaign billboards of the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and his running mate, Senator Kashim Shettima, have been spotted near the Benin Airport in Edo state.

Opposition political parties in the state were barred from displaying campaign posters for their respective candidates.

Recall that the PDP-led state government, which has been accused of using state machinery to frustrate and prevent opposition parties from erecting campaign billboards, has claimed ownership of all billboards in Benin City, the state capital, having paid for them well in advance of the start of political campaigns.

The move was said to be aimed at the APC, the main opposition party, and possibly the Labour Party (LP).

Furthermore, the State Governor, Mr. Goodwin Obaseki, allegedly threatened to descend heavily on any billboard proprietor who accepts to erect the APC and other parties’ campaign billboards, a remark that drew the ire of members of the public who felt his stance was anti-democratic and capable of suffocating the democratic space.

The APC, on the other hand, has devised a clever way to beat the state government at its own game by placing campaign billboards at the ever-busy airport.

The strategically placed boards are located at the airport’s entry and exit points. Their eye-catching and colorful inscriptions can’t help but draw the attention of those entering and exiting the airport.
