Liz Truss has just announced that she won’t continue as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom after just 45 days, following the near-complete evaporation of her political authority.

Truss, who would become the shortest-serving prime minister in UK history, has been under pressure from Tory MPs to quit after the resignation of Suella Braverman as home secretary and as the Tory party plunged into chaos.

Speaking outside No10, Liz Truss said: ‘I recognise… given the situation I cannot deliver the mandate on which I was elected by the Conservative Party.’

“This morning I met the chairman of the 1922 Committee, Sir Graham Brady.

‘We’ve agreed that there will be a leadership election to be completed within the next week.

‘This will ensure that we remain on a path to deliver our fiscal plan and maintain our country’s economic stability and national security.

“I will remain as Prime Minister until a successor has been chosen.
‘Thank you.”
