Former UK Prime Minister, Theresa May, has lauded the US Congress on the affirmation of the Electoral College win of President-elect Joe Biden.
The affirmation was done on Wednesday at a joint session of Congress with Vice President Mike Pence present.
Prior to the affirmation, supporters of President Donald Trump had invaded the US Capitol to try to stop the session.
They were egged on by claims from Trump which alleged widespread voter fraud in the election of November 3, 2020.
Reacting to the invasion, May described it as a disturbing scene, adding that there is no place for the rule of the mob.
“After yesterday’s disturbing scenes at the Capitol, I welcome that Congress has certified Joe Biden as the next President. The orderly transition of power is a hallmark of a mature democracy. There is no place for the rule of the mob,” she wrote on her official Twitter handle.
The affirmation by Congress means there will be a transition to a Biden Presidency on January 20, 2021.
Trump also affirmed the same thing in a statement he issued hours after the session in Congress.
“Even though I totally disagree with the outcome of the election, and the facts bear me out, nevertheless there will be an orderly transition on January 20th,” Trump said.
“I have always said we would continue our fight to ensure that only legal votes were counted. While this represents the end of the greatest first term in presidential history, it’s only the beginning of our fight to Make America Great Again
