Edo state police command has confirmed that six persons were over the weekend shot in a burial ceremony in Ama Community in ETSAKO West local government area of Edo state.
Two suspects alleged to have been involved in the gunshot incident have been arrested by the police.
On a routine patrol in the locality, the police got a distress call that a burial ceremony was disrupted by two gunmen who were trigger happy to have shot some persons in the ceremony.
Police preliminary investigation revealed that one John Ebatame and Moses Okoyomon were believed to have used double barrel gun to shoot at least six persons in the Community in the burial ceremony of one late Mrs Martina Rabi.
The investigation further revealed that John and Moses followed the corpse of the woman from Ubiaja in Esan South-East local government area of Edo state for burial in Ama Community, Edo state.
John is said to be a hunter in Ubiaja, Edo state.
The report says he followed the mourners from Ubiaja to Ama village, where he fired the gunshots into the air, which destroyed the Community’s electricity wires.
On noticing that he had destroyed their electricity cable, the youths confronted the culprits.
In the cause of an argument, John threatened to shoot at them, which he allegedly did.
Five persons, namely; Mathew Enebor, Sule kadiri, Christian Okpoke, Momodu Ambrose and Ibadan Okhere and one unknown person, were injured in the process.
The injured persons are currently receiving treatment at Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital in Edo state.
One double barrel gun and seven expended cartridges were recovered from them.
The Commissioner of Police Edo State, CP Phillip Aliyu Ogbadu, has warned that anyone who commits a crime in Edo state would be arrested and brought to justice.
He enjoined the people of the Ama Community not to take laws into their hands as an investigation into the incident is ongoing.
