Edo State Stands on a threshold of history in the making for many reasons.
The politics of Edo has been nothing but turbulent especially when it comes to the ruling Party, the people democratic party (PDP) and their endless battle for supremacy, the countless litigations amongst contending State and non States actors in the State coupled with her failure in dividends of democracy remittances. Edo have indeed been a theatre of political rigmarole.
However, the essence of the piece is neither to x-ray the cause, root cause nor the remote cause of the crisis but a simple comparative and observatory analysis of the race for the Senatorial seat vis as vis the Candidates and their pedigree, chances and an attempt will be made to espouse a candidate.
The forthcoming 2023 general elections in Edo State is one that will feature all elective offices conducted by the independent National electoral commission (INEC) apart from the gubernatorial elections for obvious reasons. The Senatorial elections by default is the highest amongst the offices to be vyed for hence the focus.
The People’s democratic party (PDP) by virtue of their conducted Edo South Senatorial primaries have produced Hon Ogbeide Ihama, the incumbent member representing Oredo federal Constituency in the house of Representatives on one hand and Hon Matthew Iduroeyekewen on the other hand while the All Progressive Congress (APC) have Hon Valentine Owamagbe Asuen aka DVD as her Senatorial Candidate for Edo South, Same goes for Labour party with a female candidate relatively unknown whose political analyst believe will be substituted for senator Mathew Irughide and other newer political parties.
For the purpose of this piece however, I will contain myself within the confines of the two major parties (No disrespect to other political parties).
Looking at the Candidates of the PDP (as the last is yet to be heard with the myriad of court cases on the leadership of the party and whose faction holds the validity), I see confusion ahead that will hinder their chances at the polls and despite been a member of the house of Representatives, Hon Ogbeide Ihama and Hon Matthew Iduroeyekewen who was a two time member of the Edo State House of Assembly with sundry other positions he has occupied in the past , despite the believe that PDP has know Senatorial candidate for the now yet the duo’s popularity can’t be compared to the house hold name/nature of that of Hon Valentine Owamagbe Asuen.
With the burden to prove the almost none existent political and development contributions their present and hitherto occupied offices ought to bring or brought, the duo comes with a burden to prove their worthiness for higher position and that is an electoral baggage that the ever savvy, politically aware and cosmopolitan electorate of Edo South will definitely query.
Hon Valentine Owamagbe Asuen (DVD) of the All progressive congress (APC) whose political pundits believe is the only Senatorial candidate for the now in Edo south senatorial district from all indication in the forth coming general election 2023 on the other hand is not only eminently qualified but has a name that resonate with the young and the old, a bridge builder and one that’s given to Human empowerment. A breath of fresh air with no baggage but a number of successes since he emerged politically, a fine bred Edo Man Born into a famous, reputable and disciplined family. He knows his roots and he is someone that has spent most of his life in Edo State, created a fortune for himself with a burning desire to replicate same for a large majority of residents and indigenes thereby turning the fortunes of Edo State around with particular emphasis on the youthful demographic because as a Youth, he understands the issues that plagues the Senatorial district as it relates to his generation. He is upwardly mobile, with creative and innovative ideas, one that has helped him as an entrepreneur and even as a private individual, he has made a mark with over a thousand direct staff on his payroll and several other indirect ones.
Comparatively and conclusively, With no baggage, DVD stands a better chance at the polls way ahead of all others. From the foregoing therefore, Hon Valentine Owamagbe Asuen, young and passionate is best suited for the Red Chambers.
