Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has stepped up his attacks on President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government with a scathing criticism that his administration is implementing “monetary rascality” and “playing the ostrich” instead of taking urgent steps to solve the problem.

He offered this fresh attack on the President in a statement released on Thursday wherein he responded to the dismissal of his previous allegation by the Finance Ministry that the CBN, acting under the instruction of the President, printed 60 billion naira for Governors to share as allocation for the month of March.

The Minister of Finance, budget and national planning, Zainab Ahmed, had on Wednesday denounced Obaseki’s claims as a “sad lie”, adding that the Federal Government only distributes revenue generated by federal agencies including the NNPC and the FIRS as monthly federal allocation to the states.

Her explanation has official support from the CBN, a constitutionally independent institution that pursues policies designed by finance and economic experts as the best course of action for the country on a short and long-term basis. There is also a detailed financial breakdown of the country’s monthly revenue and how they are distributed to states on relevant websites of the finance ministry.

Unwilling to admit the error of his sensational claim which has since gone viral on the internet and made international press, Governor Obaseki stood by his position in his recent statement, essentially accusing the Buhari-led Federal Government of irresponsibility and playing to the gallery instead of rising up to the economic challenge.

His statement read: “Rather than play the ostrich, we urge the (Buhari) government to take urgent steps to end the current monetary rascality, so as to prevent the prevailing economic challenge from degenerating further.”

“We believe it is imperative to approach the Nigerian project with all sense of responsibility and commitment and not play to the gallery because ultimately, time shall be the judge of us all.”

Earlier, in a joint communique released by the PDP Governors after a meeting in Makurdi, Governor Godwin Obaseki agreed that the President was presiding over what is becoming a failed state and has shown a lack of capacity to govern.
