Arsenal manager, Mikel Arteta, has said he wants former boss, Arsene Wenger, “close to me” in an official capacity.

However, Arteta admits only the Frenchman can dictate the timing of his return to the club.

Wenger ended his 22-year reign as Gunners boss in 2018, officially by mutual consent. But he has subsequently said the manner of his exit “was not my decision”, as he had one year left on his contract at the time.

Arsenal failed to qualify for the Champions League in his final two seasons and his successor Unai Emery only lasted 18 months, before being replaced by Arteta.

When asked by ESPN what specific role Wenger would be given, Arteta replied: “I cannot tell you now. But what I can say is I would like him to be much closer personally to me because I think it would be a great help, it would be a great help for the club.

“Things take time and I think he has to dictate those timings. What I can say from my side and I think on behalf of everybody, that we would be delighted to have him much closer.”

Wenger currently works with FIFA as head of global development.
