Igarra Road/Drainage Controversy: Coalition Group Commends Akpatason Over Swift Intervention, Calls For Citizen Vigilance

A national advocacy group, the Coalition of Good Governance and Economic Justice in Africa (CGGEJA), has offered a commendation of Hon. Peter Akpatason, the Akoko Edo Reps member, over his swift reaction to concerns expressed by constituents on the quality of an ongoing road and drainage project in Igarra.

In a Tuesday statement signed by its National Director, Mr. John Mayaki, the group said Hon. Peter Akpatason’s petition to the Rural Development Agency, the agency of government directly responsible for the contract awarding and due diligence on quality execution, demanding investigation and explanation on the state of affairs has restored confidence in his sincerity and readiness to pursue the matter to a logical end.

The statement read in part, “Hon. Peter Akpatason has since his election to represent Akoko-Edo Constituency in the Federal House of Representatives shown example of committed and spirited public service. Through his interventions and people-focused politics, several construction projects have been sited and executed in Akoko-Edo to public relief and commendation.”

“He has initiated an unparalleled infrastructural drive, earning for himself a befitting sobriquet as ‘Mr. Project’. It is against this backdrop that recent revelations on the substandard state of a road and drainage construction in Igarra generated many concerns and raised several questions.”

“However, the Representative, through his immediate petition to the Rural Development Agency, the body responsible for the awarding of the project to a contractor deemed qualified and negotiation of terms that directly impact the quality of execution, has demonstrated yet again that he is in sync with his people and ready to pursue the matter to a logical end.”

“While we commend Hon. Peter Akpatason and are assured of his sincerity on the matter, we urge him to follow through with the investigations and ensure that necessary changes are made to the said project to guarantee durability.”

“We also encourage the citizens to remain vigilant and partner with the government at all levels to make certain that resources are managed responsibly in the delivery of relevant public services.”
