OPINION: Osun State Governorship Election Post Mortem

By Charles Chukwuedo Snr, Esq.

1, Congratulations to Senator Ademola Adeleke (PDP) Governor elect. The people of Osun State have spoken. We must respect the people’s democratic mandate. The same way that I have always urged children of hate and anger to respect the people’s democratic mandate when it comes to President Muhammadu Buhari.

2, Congratulations to Mr. President, President Muhammadu Buhari. You continue to demonstrate to the world that you are a true democrat. A progressive. You have succeeded in fine tunning our electioneering process. History will be kind to you. I commend you Mr. President for not interfering in our elections. You are one President who have not enmeshed himself in our electioneering process. Your impeccable integrity remains your unique selling point. A magnet that magnets some of us who adore you. Your loyalist. Continue to make us proud.

3, Congratulations to INEC. Some Nigerians are quick to condemn our government institutions. The same people hibernate when our government agencies get it right. It’s only fair that we recognise and commend government agencies that are doing well. Let’s not forget the saying; “If a man kills a lion, you tell him well done, he will gather more strength to kill 10 lions”. INEC you have done well under your chairperson, Professor Mahmood Yakubu. INEC is a sign of hope. INEC sends a message that we can get it right. We cannot give up on Nigeria.

4, Yesterday’s election in Osun State was marred by vote buying. Especially by the 2 main political parties. APC and PDP. We must put a stop to this undemocratic trend. It is not good for our democracy. The politcal bickering in Osun State contribued to PDP’S win. Former governor of Osun State, Aregbesola and his successor, Governor Oyetola fell out. It is my considered opinion that Aregbesola did not support Governor Oyetola. Do not Underestimate a former governor. You do that at your own peril. A former governor has political structure. He has followership. I need not say much. Use your tongue to count the number of teeth in your mouth.

5, Senator Adeleke and his running mate are both Christians. They contested on a Christian Christian ticket. They still managed to win. Mind you Osun state is a Secular State. In fact Osun State has more Muslims than Christians. Heaven did not fall because it is a Christian Christian ticket. The Muslim governing body did not make a farce about it. Progressive Nigerians understand that the decision to do a Christian Christian ticket is based on political considerations. If a Christian Christian ticket would get PDP a win in Osun State, why not. It’s about winning at the end of the day.

6, Labour party was nowhere to be found in the scheme of things in Osun State. Labour party didn’t even have polling agents in many of the polling units. This is the same Labour party some people refer to as a 3rd force. The time Labour party spent in singing war song in oshogbo; “nzogbu nzogbu enyimba enyimba enyi”. I don’t know which war they are fighting. They could have invested half the time to put thing’s in place in Osun State. How political parties perform in gubernatorial state elections matters a great deal. Osun election outcome is a confident booster for PDP whether you like it or not. It’s clear to all who choose to use their head instead of their heart that Labour party only exist on the pages of social media. Labour party by their performance yesterday, they are not even an “inch” force. Talkless of it being a 3rd force.

7, On a final note Congratulations to Osun State electorates and all other Stake holders. The election in Osun State overall was a success. You did Nigeria proud. Thanks to the good people of Osun state for exhibiting a mature display. Above all Congratulations to the People’s democratic party. (PDP). Congratulations to the dancing governor elect.
