Suspected Armed Robber Targetting POS Shot Dead In Benin

The suspect was the last of the reported four-person suspected armed robbery gang who have been terrorisng some part of Benin city, particularly targetting POS shops.

He was shot dead by a combined team of the police and vigilantes in an effort to comb the increasing insecurity in the metropolis.

The suspect met his end Tuesday night while trying to flee from a crime scene around Airport road in Benin city.

According to Standard Gazette crime correspondent Festus Alenkhe who monitored the incident learned that the four suspected armed robbers robbed owners of shops and other businesses.

The hoodlums later stormed Lucky way in Ikpoba Hill, Benin City where they robbed operators of Point of sales Shops (POS) and their customers.

The armed men also attacked and robbed in another Point of Sales shops at Federal Road, Benin city carting away cash, mobile phones, and some personal items.

Standard Gazette gathered that the armed men later advanced to Airport road, OKO central, Aruogba, Umegbe and Ebo areas of Benin city robbing residents and strangers on their way.

One Mr Julius was allegedly shot dead by the rampaging fearless armed robbers.

The police and members of the vigilante who were on a routine patrol rammed into the hoodlums, resulting in a gun duel.

Three of the suspects were killed while one of them escaped with gunshot wounds.

On Tuesday night, the escapee suspect was found dead around the Airport Road area of Benin city.

Police identified the unlucky suspect as one of the prisoners who escaped from Benin Correctional Facility during the October EndSars protest.

Speaking with Standard Gazette, some of the victims said: “The gunmen were very vicious in the attack. I was shocked to see how one of them brought out a gun and killed a man who happens to be a community youth leader in my area”.

Another victim, a POS operator, who is not named due to the severity of the issue “the armed robbers just came to my POS stand and pretended to be genuine customers but suddenly brought out guns and attacked everyone in sight”.

The Edo State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Chidi Nwabuzor said: “The police will not relent in bringing criminals in Edo state to their kneels.

“Enough policemen have been drafted to all nooks and crannies of Edo state”.

Items recovered from the deceased suspect include mobiles phones, and N82,000 cash snatched from his victims.

As at press time, the felled armed robbery suspect’s body has been deposited in the mortuary for further investigation.
