The President of National Union of Textile Garment and Tailoring of Nigeria, Comrade John Adamu, has warned the Federal government against removing subsidy on petroleum products or increasing tariff on electricity as currently being speculated.

Adamu gave this warning in Minna at the 33rd National Education Conference in Minna, Niger State.

He argued that any move in that direction will surely spell doom for the almost collapsing Industries in the country and make life more difficult for Nigerians.

“Why is the government still talking about subsidy now. Where is the concept of subsidy. If we produce, why do you think of subsidy. Most Nigerians are already suffering under the hardship of high prices of foodstuffs and other goods and removing subsidy which means increase in price of petrol will further bring inflation on the goods which is not good for Nigerians now”

“What Nigerians want to hear from the government now is actualizing the past promises of fixing the ailing refineries across the country and make them function optimally and also fix the epileptic Power supply in the country instead of forcing Nigerians to continuously pay for darkness,” he insisted.

The union president maintained that instead of bringing more hardship to the people, the federal government should ensure that the three Hydro Electricity Power Stations in Niger State are made to work optimally to guarantee stable electricity supply.

“No country can survive and industrialize without stable electricity. It is not to be available alone but it must be stable and affordable because the sale of the product is determined by the cost of the production so if it means subsidizing Power for the survival of the Industries, government has a responsibility and should be seen to do that,” he further emphasized

Adaji also noted the need by the Nigeria Customs Service to intensify efforts in checking smuggling and dumping of sub-standard goods from China into Nigeria that has destroyed the local industries.
