The emergence of Godwill Akpabio, the former governor of Akwa Ibom state, as a potential candidate for the Senate Presidency in Nigeria, would raise many credibility challenges for the Tinubu-led government and his EFCC case.
Firstly, Godwill Akpabio has been accused of corruption during his time as governor of Akwa Ibom state. His case with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is still ongoing. If he becomes the Senate President, it would raise questions about the government’s fight against corruption and whether they condone corrupt practices in the highest echelon of governance.
Secondly, Akpabio was a member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) until recently when he defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC). This may raise suspicions about his true intentions and loyalty to the party. It may also cause divisions within the APC as some members, especially those who have been with the party since its inception, may feel undermined by his sudden elevation to such a high position.
Thirdly, Akpabio’s Senate Presidency would raise questions about the selection process within the APC. It may be seen as favoritism towards Akpabio, who is believed to be a close ally of Tinubu. This could undermine the credibility of the APC within its own ranks and among the general public.
In conclusion, the emergence of Godwill Akpabio as the Senate President would raise many credibility challenges for the Tinubu-led government and his EFCC case. It remains to be seen whether such a move would be politically expedient or whether it would further damage the already fragile image of Nigerian politics. Ultimately, the government must show that it is committed to fighting corruption and promoting transparency and accountability in all levels of governance.
