Presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has expressed disappointment over the absence of Nigeria’s president-elect, Bola Tinubu at the Abuja Marathon 2023.
Sowore who joined other participants in the maiden edition of the Abuja International Marathon held on Saturday said he was also expecting the Minister of Federal Capital Territory ( FCT ), Mohammed Bello, to join in the race so that the political leaders could show their fitness.
According to Sowore, “This is the first Abuja marathon, I participated and I ran longer than I expected. I expected that the Minister of FCT will be here.. I also expected that I would see some presidential candidates. I was even expecting Tinubu to be here but apparently I am the only presidential candidate standing after the election.
“It was a great experience. I ran with kids, great kids. I am of the opinion that we are wasting a lot of talents in this country.”
Sowore stressed the importance of sports as one of veritable tools to unite Nigerians and generate employments for teeming unemployed graduates in the country.
He therefore urged the Nigerian leaders to invest and focus more on sport development.
The marathon started at Abuja Continental Hotels formerly known as Sheraton Hotels and terminated at the Eagle’s Square where he was presented with gold medal and a certificate of participation.
He also used the occasion to interact with kids who participated in the race not to give up on their dreams and ambitions adding that they are the future leaders who will make the country proud.
Kenya’s Emmanuel Naibet and Bahrain runner, Ruth Jebet, won the race’s men and women’s categories, respectively.
Naibet won the race with a time of 2:13:45.
