Some people usually discover that their fingernails and toenails turn bad with damages seen on them. This condition is caused by an infection that is called Paronychia.

Paronychia is an inflammation of the skin around the fingernails and toenails due to bacterial infection. It can occur suddenly or over a period of time.

This inflammation to the nails can be caused by trauma, irritation or infection of the nails due to bacterias entering a broken skin near the curticle or nail folds.

TYPES OF PARONYCHIA

There are two types of Paronychia which are outlined as follows;

1) Acute Paronychia

2) Chronic Paronychia

ACUTE PARONYCHIA

It is an infection that developes on the fingernails due to biting, picking, manicures, etc. The infection is caused by Staphylococcus and can develop very fast.

2) CHRONIC PARONYCHIA

This infection is caused by many infecting agents such as candida yeast and bacterias. It developes slowly over a period of time. It most times affects people who work frequently with water due to the fact that wet skin and excessive soakings of the hands and legs in water disrupts the natural barrier of the curticle thereby allowing bacterias to set in.
