In a surprising turn of events, the Obaseki family numbered over 200 has announced their decision to dump the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and throw their support behind the All Progressives Congress (APC) gubernatorial candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo, ahead of the Edo State elections.
Speaking at a mega rally in Oredo LGA, the leader of the Osaro Obaseki faction claimed that they are more disappointed than the people of Edo State with the performance of their brother, Governor Godwin Obaseki. “We have been supporting him since 2016, but now we are leaving him because he has failed Edo. We don’t need a brother who is disrespectful to our Oba,” the leader stated.
The Obaseki family members expressed their belief that Okpebholo is the right candidate to “rescue Edo” and undo the perceived failures of the current administration. They cited the transformation witnessed under the leadership of former Governor Adams Oshiomhole as a key reason for their defection to the APC.
This move by the Obaseki family is seen as a significant blow to the PDP’s gubernatorial aspirations in Edo State, as the Obaseki name carries substantial influence within the political landscape. The APC is now positioned to capitalize on this development and bolster its chances of securing victory in the upcoming elections.
