The Edo State chapter of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), under the leadership of Chairman Comrade Bernard Ajobiewe, yesterday paid a congratulatory visit to Dr. Paddy Iyamu, the Executive Chairman of the Edo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB).
During the visit, Comrade Bernard Ajobiewe, the delegation leader, emphasized the significance of recognizing Dr. Iyamu’s role, noting that SUBEB acts as the primary constituency for teachers. He expressed the union’s optimism about the positive changes being initiated by the new chairman. He stated, “We are delighted with your appointment and the visible efforts to transform the educational sector.” The delegation aimed to discuss previous administration challenges and suggest improvements.
Comrade Bernard highlighted critical issues affecting education, including a shortage of qualified teachers and the reliance on casual staff—something the NUT strongly opposes due to the lack of professionalism. He insisted that teacher promotions, which have been stalled for over three years, should occur annually. He also pointed out the dilapidated condition of schools, although he acknowledged the positive steps taken by Dr. Iyamu.
Furthermore, Comrade Bernard called for a review of salary payment schedules to ensure uniformity for primary and secondary school staff and suggested revisiting school closing hours for better learning conditions.
In response, SUBEB Chairman, Dr. Iyamu expressed his commitment to enhancing the educational landscape in Edo State, stating, “Together, we can make education formidable.” He invited collaboration from the NUT and pledged to address the concerns raised. He also warned that the new board would not tolerate teachers neglecting their responsibilities, urging them to be diligent in their roles.
Hon. Mrs. Angela Ebiuwa Okpamen, representing Edo South on the board, added that non-performing teachers could face compulsory retirement.
