Mrs. Lilian Omokhuale nee Omoruyi Oloton, the daughter of a famous business tycoon in Edo State, Chief Executive of Uyi Technical Int.Ltd, Mr. Omoruyi Oloton committed suicide on Saturday night, 8 October.
Standard Gazette correspondent Festus Alenkhe gathered that Lilian, 40, mother of two, killed herself after some international fraudsters defrauded her for over N300million.
Standard Gazette gathered that her father, Uyi Technical boss Omoruyi Oloton, only knew about his daughter’s predicament the night she took her life.
SG learned that Lilian met the fraudsters, based in Europe, some time ago and arranged to help her set up an electronic business in Benin City; unknown to her, it was the beginning of her end.
According to the information gathered by our correspondent, Lilian obtained a loan from an individual running into over one hundred million naira (N100m) and transferred it to her defrauders.
As with their tactics, the fraudsters demanded more money, leading to Lilian borrowing over a hundred million’s more.
It was learned that her father, Mr. Oloton, did not know her daughter’s predicament.
What really pushed Lilian Omokhuale into taking her life?
Lilian realized she had been defrauded when the business failed to take off. Meanwhile, her donors started calling her for repayments.
Multiple sources within the family told Standard Gazette that Lilian borrowed more money from other sources to pay off those she was already owed.
On Sunday, 9 October, a day before she committed suicide, a Standard Gazette reporter confirmed that Mr. Omoruyi Oloton received a phone call from an unknown person that his daughter, Lilian, owed him N150m.
Mr. Omoruyi also received calls from other loan sharks demanding the money Lilian owed. This reporter learned that Lilian committed suicide before her father could intervene.
Lilian drank a pesticide called “Sniper” and died at the hospital despite health professionals’ efforts to revive her.
When The Gazette’s reporter visited, her father’s residence in Benin city besieged Mr. Oloton’s home to express condolences over his loss.
The questions in residents’ minds remain unanswered. While some wondered why she had to take her life, others sympathized with her children, who she left behind.
Some other residents put her in their prayers, asking God to forgive her of all her sins and grant her eternal rest.
Mr. Omoruyi Oloton was still in shock when our correspondent left his residence.
The Edo State Commissioner of Police, CP Abutu Yaro, said the police are aware of the incident but would make a public statement in due course.
